Making it from scratch uses up chicken bones you’d toss otherwise, saving money and reducing waste. Canning it lets you stock your pantry with homemade goodness, ready whenever you need it. Here at the farmstead, it’s a practical way to keep our kitchen stocked and our meals hearty.

How to Make & Can Chicken Bone Broth

Here’s the basic process to get you started:

  1. Gather Bones: Save bones from a roasted chicken or use fresh ones. Add veggies like carrots, celery, and onions for flavor.

  2. Simmer Low and Slow: Place bones and veggies in a pot or slow cooker with water, a splash of apple cider vinegar, and herbs. Simmer 12–24 hours for rich broth.

  3. Strain It: Remove solids with a fine mesh strainer to get clear broth.

  4. Can Safely: Pour hot broth into sterilized jars, leaving 1-inch headspace. Process in a pressure canner (85 minutes for pints, 100 minutes for quarts at 10 PSI, adjusted for altitude).

  5. Store: Cool jars, check seals, and store in your pantry for up to a year.
